Yesterday we experienced a moving exhibit at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery and learned about the bus boycott it spurred led by Martin Luther King Jr. Also went to the Greyhound bus station where 20 college students who were in the Freedom Riders were brutally beaten for riding the busses together (black and white). Our theme this week is God's Upside down Kingdom. We having been working and praying for God's kingdom to come where there are places it still needs to.
Today was my second work day of my first mission trip. I had a great day! We are currently painting at the local boys and girls club. My group is trying to make it a place that the kids are happy to come to. Yesterday we got to play for a little while on a break from painting with the kids. While I was talking to the kids I thought that I was not really making any connections, but when we showed up today to work I was completely surprise. They were so excited that we had come back. The kids that I had wanted to talk to had come up to me and wanted to play! It truly made my day!
Over the past few days Nicole, Spencer, and Annie have been helping to paint the gym at the Boy's and Girl's Club. They also had the opportunity to play with the kids and connect with the volunteers and workers. It was so nice to be able to see how the workers were impacting the kids and how much love they showed towards them.
Riley, Creed, Lauren, Nick, Jenna and Jen led us in a skit last night about the importance of planting your seeds in rich soil. They did an awesome job!
Today was the first day of normal programing. This means that the Work Projects and Kids Club began. Late last night, we were informed of which groups we were in. We are currently sharing our highs and lows of the day along with the famous post - club discussion (yes, posting during discussion :). My experience today with Kids Club, a summer program for kids, was amazing. There is quite a culture difference where we are serving and many of the kids spoke Spanish very well. This caused more then just an economical difference. Registering children was difficult due to languages differing. Along with accents, ways of life and languages caused for quite an interesting day! I am beyond happy with the challenges and rewards that were present today. Thanks all for reading and keeping up with our travels! Peace, love, and mission work :)
